Product Description Carla tate is a mentally challenged young woman who has just graduated from her special boarding school and is ready to face life in the real world. While trying to slip out of her wealthy familys protective grip and exert her independence she meets and falls in love with a mentally challenged young man. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 10/14/2003 Starring: Juliette Lewis Giovanni Ribisi Run time: 130 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Garry Marshall
Amazon.com Filming a love story centered on two mentally challenged people is a touching idea, one that's been attempted in films such as Benny and Joon and even, to a certain extent, As Good As It Gets. The Other Sister is another addition to the genre, a well- acted comedy-drama centering on the romance of Carla (Juliette Lewis) and Daniel (Giovani Ribisi) and throwing in some general family angst as a secondary story line. The acting is tremendous--Lewis and Ribisi both give convincing performances without condescending to their characters. Diane Keaton plays yet another charming scatterbrain, this time as Elizabeth Tate, the uptight, rich mother who wants a picture-perfect life. But good acting isn't enough here. These fine actors drown in a sea of mediocre writing, and we're left with a film with no real conflict or tension. Will Carla and Daniel make it work? Well, of course. Will mother Elizabeth loosen up about her "gay workaholic" daughter and let Carla live her own life? Do you really need to ask? There are a few cringe-worthy moments that have a sense of truthfulness, such as when Daniel stands up at Carla's sister's wedding to announce his feelings. But otherwise, these characters live in a pampered, fairy-tale world where the worst thing that happens to them is that the meanies at school put chewing gum in Daniel's bike helmet. Ultimately, this is a sweet, albeit occasionally saccharine, tale that will move those who are looking for cheerful fare. --Jenny Brown

Awesome Movie January 8, 2009 I can't believe this film came out 10 years ago and I only just saw it tonight. I remember people saying it was good, but it really exceeded my expectations. This movie is extremely heart-warming as well as funny, and there are superb performances from the talented and lovely Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. Diane Keaton and Tom Skerritt are great as well. I must see for romantic comedy lovers or fans of Lewis or Ribisi!
Great Movie to Ad to my collection November 16, 2008 I received this movie in great condition and very happy to ad to my collection. Thank you.
There's someone for everyone September 30, 2008 The Other Sister is a coming of age story about Carla Tate, the daughter of a successful dentist, who wants to go to college, live in her own apartment and have a boyfriend. But Carla is mentally challenged, and her mom would prefer to keep her safe at home. This story will remind you that those who are different have the same hopes & desires as the rest of us and, in Carla's case, an extra portion of determination. Beautifully filmed on location in San Francisco and with talented performances by Juliette Lewis & Giovanni Ribisi, the Other Sister does a great job portraying its characters with humor while not causing viewers to laugh AT them. A real love story that's sure to please the romantic in you.
AWESOME July 28, 2008 When this movie first came out my kids were a bit younger, and they loved it! I looked all over and finally found it on Amazon. I would recommend if you are looking for a fun family movie! Juliette Lewis does a GREAT Performance
VERY WELL ACTED AND NOT OVERLY SENTIMENTAL! 3 1/2 STARS! July 12, 2008 This film could have been a disaster, but with a smart script, fine cast and some restraint, it turned out to be a very good film. Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi are exceptional in this quirky tale of love and determination. With Tom Skerritt never more likable and Diane Keaton never more annoying(on purpose)this story of a young retarded women's determination to be independent is sometimes funny, insightful and heartbreaking! More importantly than her independence is her need to get from under her mother's thumb. She finds a friend in Giovanni Ribisi's character of Daniel and the two fall in love. I rate it 3 1/2 stars, but it's the kind of movie that I can see growing on me with repeat viewings.
