save your money, if you like being put to sleep on your couch then buy it. Don Johnson is a terrible director.
 Brings Back A Lot Of Memories! August 2, 2008
When the TV series was first launched in 1984 I was a teenager. What teenage boy doesn't enjoy seeing a Ferrari or a Wellcraft Scarab racing across the TV screen?
Now, 20+ years later, I have been watching the Season 1 - 4 DVDs (Season 5 is being shipped this week). It brings back a lot of memories!
If you watched and enjoyed the TV show, I don't know what I can say that you don't already know. Technically, the video and audio quality is very good.
Watching Crockett and Tubbs speed across the screen in that white Testarossa while listening to those old Phil Collins ('In The Air Tonight') and Glenn Frey ('Smugglers Blues') songs... what more could you ask for? :)
A Good and a Mediocre Season July 29, 2008
This season did not have the look or feel of seasons 1-3 and just felt different but it is still a lot better than Season 5.
Jan Hammer sharing composing duties with John Peterson and reducing the amount of music in the show was not a good idea and it made Miami Vice seem like any other cop or detective show without the music.
The last 3 episodes A Bullet For Crocket, Deliver Us From Evil, and Mirror Image most resembled the earlier Miami Vice shows with the music brought back in the scenes.
Antonio Fargas in Mirror Image was one of the most disturbing and interesting villains in the series.
Also it was a bad idea to introduce Sheena Easton as a love interest.
I think they did this to counter Dallas on CBS so they wanted to add a soap opera element to the show to attract more female viewers.
There are a lot of quality actors and stars showing up in guest spots like Stanley Tucci, Brian Dennehy, Julia Roberts, Ving Rhames (second time he appears as a guest star first was in the Maze), Philip Baker Hall, Ben Stiller, Alfred Molina, Esai Morales, Chris Rock, James Brown, James Hong, Iman, Oliver Platt, Michael Wincott, and Antonio Fargas.
The rest of the episodes worth watching are Amen... Send Money, Childs Play, Gods Work, Rising Suns of Death, Love at First Sight, Indian Wars, Honor Among Thieves, and Badge of Dishonor.

Still Miami Vice is one of the best shows ever to appear on TV and I doubt any show in the past or future will match its impact.
settling into a nice groove July 9, 2008
I was pleasantly surprised by Season 4 after various mixed reviews.
All the key Vice elements from previous seasons are present in full in this series, while new themes are also seamlessly introduced to keep the series fresh and moving forward.
The pink and jade background lighting - which along with white were probably the three colours that defined the decade - is outrageously on show as ever in a number of episodes. The unusual camera angles, the white Testarossa, a ludicous number of exotic sportscars, the key cast members, the mix of comedy, workaday and hi-octane episodes, the hi-fashion, it's all there to be enjoyed and savoured. May be more so as these elements don't stick out as much as in previous series where one just gawped at the technical and stylistic bravura and forgot to take the rest of it all in.
Yes the series is gloomier than before noticeably in that lots of scenes are shot on grey or rainy days and the men's wardrobe is now a mix of rugged jeanswear and Italian High Summer, rather than being exclusively the latter. Personally I found this made the shows more watchable and realistic - a bit more like really cool police drama and less like a super-cool Martini ad which may be seasons 1 & 2 veered towards.
Also there is a lot more substance in this series - Vietnam War issues, international arms-dealing, Indian reservation issues, the wider role of the DEA, and state gubernatorial politics rub shoulders with the standard and still throughly heady mix of seedy streetwalkers, huge mansions, hi-class cocktail parties, snaky drug-dealers, speedboats, fast cars and tasty women.
It is all definitely less feel-good than before and a bit more soul-searchingly real but that is no bad thing. There is less fancy-danning around in suits and sportscars and more emphasis on police procedure and everyday office chores - I enjoyed the more mature, and definitely more world-weary slant on nearly everything - is it me or are the dancing scenes in discos less vigorous than in earlier series? No loss of quality for me, rather more depth.
Series 3 lost its way a little trying to self-satirise itself and be less serious. In Series 4 it's as though Miami Vice finally finds its feet and its niche as a mature but still very sexy police show.
The only slightly off-beat note was the lady-detective's wardrobes. It was though they had demanded greater exposure and at times they do look a bit silly dressed in outrageously swanky outfits whilst doing everyday work in the office, just when Crockett & Tubbs had finally managed to look less like clothes mannequins and more like regular Joes. Still, all part of the fun.
