Amazon.com The Dresden Files is about a wizard named Harry. "Good marketing," a cynical observer notes in one episode from the Sci-Fi Channel's one-season wonder based on the books by Jim Butcher. "Couldn't you come up with something a little more original?" Actually, this series manages to be plenty original despite echoes of The X-Files and the 1970s cult classic The Night Stalker. Paul Blackthorne stars as Harry Dresden, a scruffy Chicago private eye whose gift comes in handy for children menaced by skinwalkers, or for offering Lt. Murphy (Valerie Cruz) of the Chicago police "an unconventional point of view" concerning grisly, bizarre cases involving werewolves, vampires, and other decidedly unfriendly spirits. The Dresden Files is a paranormal noir (para-noir?) that deftly balances genuine scares, hard-boiled moxie, and tongue-in-cheek humor, delivered with panache by "Bob" (Terrance Mann), an ancient English spirit who resides in a skull and gives.Harry supernatural assistance. Harry's backstory--magician father, wizard mother, treacherous uncle--is revealed over the course of these 12 episodes. The eighth broadcast episode, "Things That Go Bump," was reportedly intended as the series pilot, and may be the best place to start. But Harry's world-weary voice-over in the classic tradition ("If you're a wizard and you fail, people can end up dead") keeps viewers oriented. Low ratings made The Dresden Files disappear, making this DVD set welcome for the series' hardcore fans who mounted the ultimately unsuccessful letter-writing campaign to save Dresden from the "Brilliant, but Cancelled" files. But even those who are unfamiliar with Butcher's books or are not on the Sci-Fi Channel's wavelength will be charmed. --Donald Liebenson

More hits than misses January 9, 2009 I was initially skeptical when this series was being advertised on Sci-Fi. Having read Butcher's excellent books, I had some very clear perceptions of the recurring characters and their surroundings. A complete miss in any or all of the concept, casting, and/or execution would certainly not be a first in the book-to-film/TV game, and was more than likely given my pre-conceived notions. Somewhat surprisingly, concept and execution matched and occasionally exceeded expectation, although I quibble with such transformations as Harry's home being more like a storefront than the dank and dreary apartment of the books, and with him driving a Jeep (!!!!!) instead of the Beetle. But, those nit-picks aside, the overall effort is reasonable. Hollywood does a predictable job of sexing-up of Murphy, and Valerie Cruz can certainly slap cuffs on me anytime she wants. Conrad Coates is an inspired choice as Morgan, and given the obvious technical challenges inherent in Bob's character, his manifestation by Terrence Mann is as good as it gets. As for Paul Blackthorne as Harry, it took me a hell of a long time to buy him. I still read the books differently than I watch the show, and that's mostly due to Blackthorne; he's a decent actor for the material, but is he Harry? Deep fans of the books may or may not agree. If you're a TV person and have never even heard of Jim Butcher and never intend to go find out, you're probably fine, have fun with this limited series that probably got yanked before its' time.
Dresden Files is awesome and cool! January 6, 2009 The Dresden Files is a smart, cool and well acted series that was short lived on the SciFi channel. It is a great show suitable for the whole family to enjoy!Don't miss this one,its a great buy and a very entertaining watch! If you loved Moonlight, you'll enjoy this one as well!At least Moonlight is coming to the SciFi channel on Jan. 23rd 2009 at 9:00 P.M.!The SciFi channel should reconsider bringing Dresden back as well!!!

Dresden Files did NOT suffer from low ratings December 23, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Contrary to the popular MYTH being perpetuated by the SciFi channel, The Dresden Files, FAR from being a low-ratings failure, was actually one of SciFi's top rated shows that season, ranked third and BETTER and at least TWICE surpassing the ratings for their "flagship" original series Battlestar Galactica.
The show had a little bit of everything to appeal to a broad range of viewers... supernatural elements, detective/mystery, humor, action.... coupled with a superlative cast who's character chemistry was some of the best ever assembled and special effects that neither were overdone or too cheesy. The show was one that the entire family could sit down and enjoy... not many of those shows around these days!
While the show grew in popularity and viewership as the season progressed, for some reason SciFi chose not to renew it. A huge mistake on their part as the continuing popularity of author/creator Jim Butcher's novels and now graphic novel comics, as well as the brisk sales of the DVD is proving that The Dresden Files was a great show that was not given the chance to live up to it's full potential.
I heartily recommend this DVD and also might suggest to the editorial reviewer here at Amazon that they check their facts with the Neilson ratings rather than the biased propaganda distributed by SciFi in regards to the true ratings status of this show.
