With his film adaptation of his play of the same name, Tyler Perry asks the question, "Why did I get married?" The answer is different for each of the four couples featured in this relationship comedy, which includes Janet Jackson as a psychologist whose own marriage is on shaky ground. Not known for subtlety, Perry hammers in the point that no marriage is perfect--just as no one is completely blameless. Even when he presents a thoughtless husband who cheats on his wife with her hot best friend, he doesn't present the wife as a helpless martyr. As portrayed by singer Jill Scott, Sheila is an overweight woman who is cowed by her bully of a husband. But the happily ever after that awaits her is almost worth all the verbal abuse she has taken from her philandering spouse. Scott is wonderful in her role and showcases a depth of real emotions. She also brings great humor to her role (After knocking someone out, she asks a police officer, "Did I kill him?... I should've killed him.") Delivered by anyone else, the line would've been callous, but Scott is believable. Jackson, who looks lovely on screen, has a smaller role and does what she can as a wife who is having a difficult time coming to terms with the death of her young son. As for Perry, who plays the cuckolded husband of a high-powered attorney, he tones down his act to succinctly convey hurt, anger, and resentment. Though he's best known for his broad, physical comedies, he shows a deft hand at tackling answers to a very complicated question--even if the answer may be a work in progress. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars balance between the theatrics and storytelling   January 6, 2009
Tyler Perry's Why did I get married? is an excellent film about a group of couples that meet in the mountains of Colorado for a weekend. As expected, chaos erupts but what makes this movie different from your average soap opera is the acting of the all-star cast, particularly Jill Scott, whose agent should be getting more casting calls. The plot definitely involves the theatrics but overall, the movie is moved in a surprisingly fresh direction that ends on a more positive note than a lot of movies that I've seen. Definitely a must-see!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed   January 3, 2009
The storyline was great and the characters were as well. The thing that I hated was the use of profanity. It was used extremely too much for my taste. I usually enjoy Mr. Perry's movies and buy them, but this is one I will not buy.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie and on point   January 2, 2009
Another hit from Tyler Perry. He is on point with this movie. A must see whether you're married or single. There's lots of funny, drama, and a tear jerker too. Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Tyler Perry Movie Ever   December 16, 2008
I saw this movie in the theaters and simply had to have it. It is one of the Greatest movies ever made. I was married at the time I saw it and it made me see how important marriage is. I suggest ever couple watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!   December 1, 2008
All these tedious nit-picked points by the nit-pickers of Mr. Perry's movies. If I were a Pied Piper I would gather all you whiners and complainers and haters of Tyler Perry's movies and put each of you to the hard task of producing, and doing all the hard work to create your own. With all the points you bring out why don't you take all that energy you are using to complain and judge Mr. Perry's work and create your own movie, music, whatever. This is Mr. Perry's vision and work, go find and do your own; then and only then will you have a right to complain and whine and point out flaws in someone else's work. If you enjoyed Mr. Perry's work, good, if not, still good. Mr. Perry loves his fans and obviously works hard to produce excellent work for our enjoyment. His movies are for your enjoyment, They are not necessarily, all about real life. If you want realism, look at what is going on around you in your own real life. Mr. Perry's movies, just as any other movie, are for ENTERTAINMENT-PURPOSES ONLY. >my,my,my..just crabs in a bucket; don't build up, just pull down; always obtaining-never maintaining anything; get a gun and kill any progressiveness, or just simply nit-pick it to death. Get a life of your own,for crying out loud. Thank God for Tyler's people who encourage and build him up. More power to ya! Tyler
