Amazon.com Life is idyllic in the fairytale world where conflict is minimal and breaking into song solves every problem, but what happens when a princess from the fairy world gets magically transported into the real world? Enchanted begins in the animated fairytale world of Andalasia where Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) is destined to marry Prince Edward (James Marsden) and live happily ever after. Problem is, Edward's step-mother Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) doesn't want to give up the throne and will do anything to get Giselle out of Edward's life. Queen Narissa's solution is to push Giselle into a well that magically lands Giselle smack in the middle of the real world--the center of Time Square in New York City, to be exact. This launches the live-action portion of the film where Giselle immediately realizes that things are frighteningly different in this new world and that she is ill-prepared for the callous ways of the people who inhabit it. Giselle finds herself alone on a stormy night in the wrong end of town, but a chance encounter with Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his princess-loving daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey) leads to a warm, safe place to spend the night and the beginnings of a complicated, yet compelling relationship. As Giselle begins to question the fairy-tale truths she's always inherently believed, Robert's outlook on life and love also begins to change significantly. Parallels to the classic Disney fairytales, Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty abound in the form of a King's and Queen's ball, small animals and rodents who clean house when called, the threat of poisoned apples, characters impulsively breaking into song, and the power of the kiss of true love and the absurd juxtaposition of fairytale idealism and stark reality is hilariously funny. Features music by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz of Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame fame, Wicked's Broadway Elpheba Idina Menzel as Nancy, and even a brief appearance by former Princess voice talent Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas). Enchanted is one of the best, most entertaining Disney films of the year. I actually was "enchanted" by this movie! January 8, 2009 I watched this movie just last night on Netflix, and though I thought it would be cute, I wasn't sure just how good it would be. This movie really shocked me. It was practically an old-school-Disney "Princess" movie - Brownie Point #1 - and it actually had REAL people in it, including a child (and to me, most kids in movies recently are just obnoxious), yet it wasn't overly mature (as in elements I don't think are appropriate for children) or annoying - Brownie Point #2! The cast was great, in my opinion, and I loved how the animated characters actually looked like them! It has music in it - classic "somehow everyone knows the lyrics and sings along" music - but that is part of the charm and it even sort of makes fun of itself about the singing.
Over all, a very good family movie! If you are a person that is looking for a quality kids movie that doesn't have a lot of the garbage that's in a lot of children's films nowadays - then this one is for you! It does have elements of fantasy magic - but no more so than "Sleeping Beauty" or the other classic animated ones.
Fun Flick January 7, 2009 This item was shipped quickly. The movie itself is a fun movie and family friendly. There are a lot of "hidden" surprises in the movie and Disney has no problem poking fun at themselves.
AMAZING! January 3, 2009 This is an instant Disney Classic. Walked in not wanting to see it and walked out ENCHANTED! I Recommend it to everyone
Sweet romantic fairy tale December 30, 2008 Enchanted is a sweet romantic yet somewhat realistic fairy tale. Great songs, good acting, interesting and funny story line. Little girls can enjoy it for the fairy tale part, and big girls can enjoy it for the tongue-in-cheek humor about Prince Charming and dreams coming true. A great all-around gift.
For those who appreciate old-fashioned fairy tales December 30, 2008 I found this movie to be pure enjoyment with plenty of opportunity for laughs. It combined what I loved about Disney movies of old with a shrewd cynical humor that a New Yorker would appreciate. Young and old will enjoy watching this film. Amy Adams personifies (literally) the Disney princess!
