5 out of 5 stars Excellent, keeps you in your seat   January 6, 2009
A very well acted and scripted movie showing the behind the scenes possibilities of everyday life of a Recon Marine.

4 out of 5 stars RECON!!!!   January 3, 2009

I love war movies, good ones like Black Hawk Down and Tears of the Sun. This series was not as action-packed as I would have thought of a Marine recon unit and it renders the same uncharitable portrayal of officers that you so often see in the movies where the enlisted men are always the heroes and the officers are a bunch of morons who just get in the way. This is just not the case in real life. The best part of this film series is the talent of the actors and how it shows what soldiers are doing when they are not in combat. It is humorous, it is repulsive, and it is inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.   January 3, 2009

Generation Kill gives great insight into the daily life of a Marine on the frontline in the early days of the Iraq War, but it falls shorts in almost every other way.

The series special effects made me cringe...for a series made in 2008, it is completely unacceptable. Helicopters and fighter planes look terrible, bullets and weapons effects are not believable(neither are the explosions), and even the blood and gore is clearly fake. Now I know special effects do not make a great film, but it does help immerse the viewer in the experience.

I guess the special effects really are not that big of a deal anyways, considering there are only a few scenes in the entire series that really show them off. As far as action goes, the series is just plain disappointing and borderline boring. The directors obviously did not try very hard on making the battles look authentic. The actors playing Marines do not move cohesively like Marines, the enemies actors are made out to look like static targets, and the firefights simply look fake...it almost made me feel like I was watching some Marines thrown into a shooting corral or some type of training course. It just simply did not seem believable to me.

Whether these problems with the special effects and action scenes are due to budget problems, or just plain laziness, is beyond me. All I know is that is seriously took away from the overall feel for me.

Now where the series does hit home is with the overall mood and reality of being a Grunt in the middle of a rather confusing conflict. The Marines of the 1st Recon company are constantly running into supply problems, intel mishaps, problems with their terrible Officers, and simply not knowing who to shoot at. It really shows the mind set that these young Marines have to be in when doing their mission, and how they execute it. The directors really did a amazing job in that sense.

Pros:
+Decent acting.
+Realistic setting and theme.
+Great insight into the mind set of a Marine during the early days of the Iraq War.
+Authentic gear and historically accurate.
Cons:
-Bad action scenes.
-Terrible special effects.
-Anti-War vibe(this is questionable, but most people will agree).
-Unrealistic and Unfair representation of PTSD in the field.

Overall "Generation Kill" is worth watching, but in no way comes close the glory of "Band of Brothers", and the similar series "Over There".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Series   January 2, 2009
I have to say, I watched this series in the summer when it came out and i was hooked on it. I was so impressed with it, just the way it was filmed made it feel real. Another great series by HBO.

This show hits the nail on the head...granted the gear they use is from 2005, and not the original invasion, this show captures everything..i thought this show was gunna suck...but i was glued to the TV all night.

As for the previous review...it shows the bond of MARINES...not soldiers.
