Amazing December 21, 2008 I have to say this DVD was amazing. I've never really paid attention to neither any Olympic ceremonies until now; nor the games either. This open ceremony has some history about China which I didn't really know about and A LOT of fireworks which was cool. Though, one thing the back of the DVD box shows is the open ceremony is 4 hours long; not true. It's more like a little over 2 1/2 hours long, and is just like the one that was aired on NBC. Still, I'd recommend this DVD to any one who would like to learn about some history in the world (or about China). Good Job Beijing.

Only an observation based on the advertisement shown on Amazon.
Whoever made this would have been smart to visit nbcdvd.com first since the jacket shown on this product is the one used by NBC on their 2008 Olympics HIGHLIGHT disc. In other words, this looks like a highlight disc, not the complete opening and closing ceremony disc.
Frankly, that's why I skipped this product and moved on ... I want to be sure to get the correct content!
2008 Olympics: Beijing 2008 Complete Opening Ceremony December 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first DVD was excellent. Excellent video and audio, and it contains a few scenes that were "commercialed out" when it was originally broadcast here. The second DVD contained the "Parade of Nations". It was excellent quality, both sound and video, was colorful, but boring after awhile, unless you were looking for a particular person/country (Yao Ming for example).
A complete disappointment because of poor picture and sound quality December 5, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I had been reading reviews here of this DVD complaining about the poor picture and sound quality, and thought, "it can't be that bad". Well, yes, it IS THAT BAD. My God. It's like a poor VHS Dub. Poor stereo sound that sounds like it could be mono. Another problem: The music that plays under the introduction to China segment and under Tom Brokaw's documentary about China and the torch relay is not the same as it was when it was rebroadcast. They re-scored it! Now, I know they probably didn't pay for the rights to the music they used to be sold on DVD, only for broadcast, but really, NBC, are you telling me you couldn't afford the extra 20 or 30k it would have cost you to secure the rights? It makes a difference! Most people aren't noticing but I DID, because I have the original broadcast from a DVR. The music that was originally used in the broadcast was more dramatic and better! Why NBC didn't release this on Blu-Ray HD disc with Dolby 5.1 surround sound (as it was on television) is beyond me, but this two disc set is a complete disappointment because of what I have mentioned. It's sad because I've seen the Opening Ceremony coverage from Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong and NBC's production had the best direction and camera shots/angles. NBC truly did a professional and top rate job, but this DVD is shoddy! They should never use Ten Mayflower productions again!
Glorious Spectacle! November 30, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony, the history of China told in all its colorful and soaring splendor, is amazing. The rest of the DVD is the parade of athletes, if you like that sort of thing after seeing it on TV.
