Director Juan Carlos Rulfo expanded his award-winning short El abuelo Cheno y otras historias (Grandfather Cheno and Other Stories) into this cutting-edge documentary about his legendary father, poet and novelist Juan Rulfo.
The director abandons the conventional biographical documentary in favor of an artful reflection on the passing of time. Rulfo concentrates on interviews with elders from his father s homeland in southern Jalisco, Mexico, though few of these ancient citizens remember his father with much detail. Undeterred, the filmmaker focuses on their faces to suggest the nature of time and how it has carved a lifetime of experience into the worn features of these elders.
Rulfo also includes interviews with family and a host of writers from his father's generation Juan Jose Arreola, Manuel Cosio, and the late Jaime Sabines.
